Description
This 1901 volume includes a history of the poison and various scientific tests on how to determine the presence of it. In Greek, arsenic comes from the word arsenikos, meaning "masculine" or "potent." Arsenic sulfides have been known and used since ancient times. Ancient Greek alchemist Zosimos described making arsenic in 300 AD. As the symptoms of arsenic poisoning were largely unknown during the time, the substance was frequently used as a murder weapon. Interestingly, in the Victorian era, a form of arsenic was mixed with vinegar and chalk and eaten by women to improve their complexions, making their skin paler.
